HSS gifted extraordinary artwork: Fiona on Skin 02 August 2024 Recently HSS were donated an extraordinary gift by a generous employee and talented artist, Deb Hamm. Deb, Change Manager, painted a portrait of Fiona Wood for consideration in the 2023 Archibald Prize exhibition – a tremendous honour to the artist and the subject. The artwork, titled ‘Fiona on Skin’, sees Professor Wood’s portrait engraved or ‘etched’ on to a large piece of cow leather stretched over a wooden frame, with acrylics used to paint her features. After a period of exhibiting in galleries around Perth, Deb has chosen to donate the portrait to HSS. “My journey with HSS has been an enjoyable one. I have been able to grow as a person and professionally. “Ever since my first year at HSS, leadership has always been so supportive of my skills as an artist. Not only have I been encouraged to come out of my shell to talk about something ...

Plastic Free July 01 July 2024 Great work is being done at HSS to seek environmentally sustainable medical consumable options, reducing the amount of plastic going to landfill. We have made the switch to thinner pallet wrap and replaced medicine cups with a biodegradable alternative. Most recently, plastic aprons have been replaced with disposable aprons made from sustainably sourced plant-based material. The compostable apron is designed to be worn by healthcare staff for general protection during any kind of procedure where there might be risk of spillage or spray on the front aspect of the body. This whole of WA Health roll out means that at the end-of-use, aprons can be disposed of in a composting facility or in landfill where they will eventually break down into harmless organic matter instead of harmful microplastics. In just 5 short months, 53.33 ton of plastic have been removed from the WA landscape. That equa...
