  • A person wearing a disposable apron made from sustainably sourced plant-based material
Plastic Free July 01 July 2024 Great work is being done at HSS to seek environmentally sustainable medical consumable options, reducing the amount of plastic going to landfill. We have made the switch to thinner pallet wrap and replaced medicine cups with a biodegradable alternative. Most recently, plastic aprons have been replaced with disposable aprons made from sustainably sourced plant-based material. The compostable apron is designed to be worn by healthcare staff for general protection during any kind of procedure where there might be risk of spillage or spray on the front aspect of the body. This whole of WA Health roll out means that at the end-of-use, aprons can be disposed of in a composting facility or in landfill where they will eventually break down into harmless organic matter instead of harmful microplastics. In just 5 short months, 53.33 ton of plastic have been removed from the WA landscape. That equa...
  • Recent graduates of the Leadership Academy
Leadership Academy graduation 28 June 2024 At HSS, we are purposefully building up great leaders. It’s not just about occupying positions of authority well, but part of our strategic vision for the whole organisation and sets us up to thrive for years to come. They also shared some of their lessons learned and seasoned leadership advice. Debra Thornborough-Owen spoke about seizing opportunities to challenge yourself, and the importance of establishing your own brand. She also recommende...

New seamless service improves patient transport 19 April 2024 Several teams across HSS have been working to deliver a system flow and reform program for the WA health system to help address the underlying causes of ambulance ramping. The new Patient Transport Coordination Hub (PaTCH) provides a seamless service for patients requiring non-emergency transport between health care facilities. First piloted at East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS) late last year to coordinate transfers originating from EMHS hospitals, PaTCH has now been fully rolled out at EMHS health facilities and Perth Children’s Hospital. As of March 2024, it is being progressively rolled out at North Metropolitan Health Service facilities (Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Osborne Park Hospital, King Edward Memorial Hospital and Graylands Hospital). South Metropolitan Health Service sites are scheduled to go live in May 2024. The Hub allows dedicated PaTCH staff to easily ...
