Our recruitment process
The following phases are indicative of our recruitment process. Please note, this process can vary depending on the role you are applying for.
Job application
- Open vacancies are found on the JobsWA, WA Health and Seek job boards
- Keep an eye on LinkedIn for promotion announcements
- Read the applicant instructions for how to apply for each role as they differ (selection criteria, cover letter, resume)
- Note: We provide reasonable adjustments for applicants with disability or from CaLD backgrounds
- Applicants can request feedback from the hiring manager if they want
- We apply various Sections of the Equal Opportunity Act to roles with a commitment to increasing our participation of diversity groups at HSS
- We always contact every candidate about outcome of application whether successful or not.
Shortlisting
- We shortlist based on skills and experience displayed in the application and whether this meets the requirement of the role
- Successful applicants will be shortlisted and invited to an interview.
Interview
- Shortlisted applicants will receive instructions about the interview before they attend
- We provide reasonable adjustments for applicants with disability or from CaLD backgrounds
- Some roles can have phone interviews/assessment centres (more so for frontline service roles)
- Interviews can vary but typically involve sitting down with a minimum of two HSS staff to discuss the experience and skills
- Some questions will be provided prior to allow the applicant to prepare. Other questions will be asked during the interview
- Interviews can be virtual or in person.
Pre-employment
- Paperwork is sent to the successful candidate and pre-employment checks are done
- Subject to employment checks, candidate receives their contract
- Candidate signs contract and sends back to HSS.
Frequently Asked Questions
Am I required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
Following the end to WA’ State of Emergency on 4 November 2022, WA Health employees are no longer required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and applicants are no longer required to show proof of vaccination for employment. For our NurseWest team members their vaccination status may influence their opportunity to work in some clinical areas.
Do you accept late job applications?
HSS does not accept late applications consistent with our WA public sector guidelines. Applicants are encouraged to make note of the closing date and time and submit their applications prior to the deadline.
Do I need to be a permanent resident or Australian citizen to gain employment with HSS?
It depends on the situation. We can support sponsorship in some cases, however the public sector encourages permanent residents.
What format should my application be in?
We recommended applications are submitted in .doc, .xls, .pdf, .rtf or .ppt format. Alternative formats such as .docx or .xlsx files will not be accepted.
Can I get an update on my application?
If you would like to know how your application is progressing, you would contact the person listed on the job advertisement. If the job has closed, you can access the job ad from the closed jobs board.
How do I know you received my application?
All applicants will receive email confirmation of application submission, so please check spam or junk folders if you haven’t received this.

Can I negotiate my salary?
We are open to negotiations of salary within the band level of the position classification.
Can a job ad close prior to the closing date?
No. Consistent with WA public sector guidelines shortlisting and selection processes do not commence until the job advertisement closes as confirmed on the advert details.
Do I have to undertake a health assessment? Get a medical clearance?
Yes, you do. We require applicants to complete a pre-employment health assessment (a short survey), which is reviewed by our HSS Work, Health and Safety team.
Do I need to list my current line manager as a referee on my application?
Listing your current line manager as a referee is not mandatory, however it is recommended.
Do you offer flexible working arrangements?
Yes, we encourage healthy work/life balance and offer flexible start and finish times, work from home, flexi leave, job share opportunities and part time options.
How should an effective government application be written?
Ensure you have the skills, experience and knowledge applicable to the essential criteria outlined in the job description before applying. It’s recommended applications are written using the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) to demonstrate suitable experience each criteria as required.
Will I need a Working With Children check?
If the position you’re applying for requires you to do ‘child-related work’ then yes, you will need to obtain a Working With Children Check as per the Working With Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004 (WA).
Will I need police clearance?
Yes, anyone who works in or provides services to the WA health system is required to undergo a Criminal Record Screening.
Will my role be based at a hospital?
HSS employ a range of people in different roles across different locations, including hospitals, health services, warehouses and corporate offices. Your location will depend on the position you have applied for.
