Feel respected in a diverse and inclusive culture

We’re committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace where our people feel welcome, seen, valued and included. Our Multicultural Action Plan aims to ensure our workforce reflects the community we support and our culture is recognised as open and inclusive. We embrace cultural diversity by sharing diversity stories, celebrating key cultural/diversity/inclusion days and implementing new initiatives so everyone feels like they belong. We’ve formed several groups to champion and promote diversity and inclusion at HSS:

  • Rainbow group (LGBTIQA+)
  • Multicultural reference group
  • Employee reference group
  • Aboriginal reference group

Some exciting initiatives launched by these groups include; providing access to a prayer room, introducing pronoun stickers for ID badges and showcasing Pride artwork at each of our locations in support of the LGBTIQA+ community.

At HSS, we have a strong focus on improving awareness of and engagement with Aboriginal culture, language and history while creating a safe space for First Nations people to work and feel valued. In 2021, a key driver of this focus involved refreshing our corporate branding to include Aboriginal artwork which was created by hundreds of our employees in an Aboriginal art workshop.

Shelley - Executive Assistant

  • Supporting your wellbeing
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Safety is a priority

The wellbeing of HSS employees is a primary focus and we regularly share information on wellness and wellbeing. We provide an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) service for anyone who needs extra support and our people have access to in-house Employee Support Officers. Each year, we run a wellbeing calendar with tools, resources and free activities and initiatives to manage stress and ensure our people are supported to be as healthy as they can be.

Wellbeing benefits can include:

  • Free flu vaccinations onsite or through a community pharmacy
  • Onsite skin cancer checks
  • Body composition/fitness scans
  • 10-minute massages in the workplace
  • 10-minute health checks
  • Discounts with our corporate health and wellness partners

We recognise that having access to independent information and resources can help our people better understand and work through situations, whether personal or work-related. EAP services are directly available for every HSS employee (whether permanent or fixed term contract) as well as immediate family members. The EAP provides free, independent advice and support, either in-person or remotely. Using the EAP is entirely confidential and no identifying information is disclosed to HSS.

The physical safety of our people is a top priority. Whether in an office, a distribution centre or a hospital, we’re all responsible for building a strong safety culture and environment so our people can go home safely to their families every day. This commitment extends to anyone who works with us or is involved with our operations. HSS has First Aid Officers across our locations and warehouses to provide immediate response care. We continue to offer preventative and proactive WHS programs including ergonomic and health assessments and our flu vaccine program. We also have a number of volunteer health and safety roles which include Health and Safety representatives,  our First Aid Officers (FAO’s), our H&S Representatives (HSR) and Work Station Assessors (WSA’s). We provide information, training, advice and support – everything our volunteers need to carry out their role and help manage our health and safety risk.

All HSS leaders have the opportunity to attend Inclusive Leadership workshops on how bias can influence decision-making and ultimately impact the psychological safety of a workplace.

Recognising your contribution

Our people are motivated by making a difference. We strongly promote a culture of recognition and our people are genuinely praised for their efforts. HSS employees can be nominated by their co-workers or HSS customers for an Excellence Award which recognises demonstration of the HSS values. Anyone nominated for an Excellence Award is also eligible for a quarterly award and the overall yearly award which takes place at a special ceremony. Awards are presented by our Executive Directors.

"I love that my contribution is valued and recognised by my peers and manager."
