Meet our people
Meet our friendly, helpful, caring and passionate people
It’s our people that make HSS such a great place to work. Whether it’s feeling inspired, cared for or respected by a leader; or being part of a dedicated and capable team, at HSS you can belong. To be successful at HSS, our people align with and live our values, have genuine customer focus and a ‘can-do’ attitude, while always being respectful of our people and their ideas.
Jason | Program Manager, Human Resources Information Management System (HRMIS)
Leading our HRMIS Program, Jason manages a talented team to deliver this once-in-a-generation, large and complex project on behalf of the WA health system.
The Program will replace WA Health’s current HR, payroll, rostering systems with a single, contemporary, cloud-based and integrated solution.
Jason says it’s going to transform the way our WA Health workforce (55,000+ employees) access HR, payroll and rostering services. “It’s going to completely change – for the better – our customers’ experience with payroll and rostering.”
“The Program is moving at a rapid pace and we’re going to be looking for a number of people over the coming months to join us to deliver this solution.”
“The team is an amazing group of motivated people who enjoy working in a collaborative environment with a shared vision to truly make a difference together – and on a large scale.”
“If you’re looking to challenge yourself and be part of something that will positively impact our State’s public health system – now is a great time to join the team.”
Lauren | Communications Officer
Flexible working is engrained into the culture at HSS because we recognise just how important work-life balance is for maintaining our health and wellbeing. It’s also one of the ways we support our workforce to be more agile, engaged and productive.
Lauren has a flexible work arrangement in place with her manager - allowing her to work part time and some days from home. “I didn’t know how important flexible work arrangements were until I had a child.
“I work part-time because I want to spend more time with my son while he’s still young. The early years fly by way too quickly, so I’m trying to savour this time as much as possible.”
“I really appreciate that my team respects the importance of my flexible working arrangement and they make sure I can be completely present with my little guy on my days off.”
“In addition to time with my son, it makes it much easier to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We tend to prioritise other people’s needs (be it children, family or our employer) at the expense of our own.”
“Flexible work arrangements can give you the extra time to maintain a healthy lifestyle without sacrificing other priorities. Even just the time saved on commuting when I work at home translates into more time focussed on work, and more time for me and my family.”
Eli | Registered Nurse, NurseWest
Eli joined the team looking for an adventure while finishing his nursing degree. And adventure is what Eli got! In addition to working throughout the Perth metro region and in the Wheatbelt, Eli has also played an important part on our frontline COVID-19 response. He joined the COVID-19 airport team to assist with health surveillance and testing, and later moved into preparing and administering COVID-19 vaccinations.
“I was really proud to contribute to WA’s frontline response during the pandemic,” he said.
After qualifying as a Registered Nurse, NurseWest offered Eli opportunities to advance his career. He recently finished his first contract in the Wheatbelt, where he gained experience in ED, acute and aged care.
“NurseWest has supported my career progression, by providing a variety of opportunities and allowing me to work closely with and learn from more senior nurses. These opportunities may not have been available to me elsewhere. I never imagined the journey I would be embarking on when I first applied to NurseWest. To tell you the truth, I have never looked back since!”
Giuseppe ‘Joe’ | Graduate Officer, ICT
Joe is 1 of 22 successful graduates in the 2022 WA Health Graduate Development Program.
Joe was lined up to do placements across Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS) and North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS), but after completing his first placement with HSS he quickly realised he had found his perfect fit.
Joe started working in our Finance team and after a short while, a longer-term position became available and Joe’s manager encouraged him to go for it.
“The end goal of the graduate program is to secure longer-term employment with an organisation that you click with and that suits your career trajectory,” said Joe. “I am lucky to have found that straight away.”
The main motivator behind Joe’s decision to stay with HSS he says was the supportive team he found himself in. “They encourage new ideas, and new ways of doing things.”
“Everyone’s really nice and supportive – they want you to learn.” He also liked that HSS provided support to the entire health system and considered it a good way to get broad exposure to the system as a whole.
Joe says working for HSS suits him because he wanted a role that felt like he was contributing back to society. “The work I’m doing at HSS is tailored to how I want to progress my professional career.”
Bas | Acting Program Manager
Moving from customer to A/Program Manager, Bas decided to trade working within hospitals for the corporate world at HSS. With an opportunity to gain a more holistic understanding of the WA health system, he tells us when he first saw the role advertised to join our Joornanginy Program, he knew it was the right role for him.
“Joining HSS meant I could still stay within WA Health and continue to pursue my interest in affecting positive change for our public health system and its patients. I knew the Program would be meaningful and exciting, with a chance to utilise my experience and play my part in a transformational change program that will benefit the lives of all Western Australians.”
“I’m glad I took the role because not only have I had chance to grow and develop my career (I recently took on an acting role as Program Manager, completed my Lean Six Sigma Certification with HSS and have enrolled in our Leadership Academy), but I’ve also been able to balance my hobbies and interests outside of work thanks to flexible working. I am currently studying at Uni, taking lessons to get a commercial pilot’s licence, trying to get into sailing for sport and regularly participate in motorcycle track days.”
“I’ve been at HSS just over 6 months now and the thing that’s stood out too me the most is how great the culture is. Everyone is friendly, inclusive and there’s a lot of diversity. I’ve met a lot of engaged and passionate people who are great at what they do.”
Simon | Change Consultant
Simon’s supporting our customers and stakeholders through some major change Programs, including our Medical Imaging Replacement Program and Human Resource Management Information System Program.
“The thing I love the most about being a Change Consultant at HSS is the opportunity to make a big difference for our health care workers.”
He started with us in 2019 in an HR role after dedicating four years to being the primary carer for his children.
“I had done some HR training during that time, but I missed being connected to the workplace and I was beginning to lose confidence in my knowledge and skills.
HSS was instrumental in bringing my confidence back. When I joined, I felt like a bit of an imposter for a while, but with the support of a highly knowledgeable team and access to a range of different opportunities, I was led to a great career pathway in change management.”
Simon has since progressed from Change Analyst to Change Consultant but says the reason he chose to work with the WA health system was not just for the career advancement – it’s also because he has two sisters in the system.
“One is an Emergency Department Consultant and the other one is a General Practitioner.”
“They’re on the frontline working to keep us healthy. And if there’s anything we can do to make their lives a little bit easier that definitely motivates me to come to work every day.”
Kate | Change Manager
Kate started in our Change Management team in 2020 as a Change Consultant working on the Human Resources Information Management System (HRMIS) Program. After a 9-month stint growing her change management skillset with us, Kate took an opportunity in the private sector. But, she quickly found herself back at HSS. She’s now working on the HRMIS Program as a Change Manager.
“I came back to HSS for the people – they’re very friendly and the leadership group is so supportive. Not to mention the great culture, endless learning and development opportunities, and flexible working options – which really help me as a working mum.”
“What’s kept me here is how much I’ve enjoyed being part of such an important Program which is set to transform the way our WA Health workforce accesses HR, Payroll and rostering services. The work we do is going to lead to so many meaningful and positive benefits for more than 55,000 customers – we’re truly making a big impact.”
