  • Meet Samantha Casserly - Manager Accounts Payable 17 September 2021 Samantha is our Manager, Accounts Payable and her team is responsible for facilitating all payments of sundry expenses and services on behalf of WA’s metropolitan public hospitals. Each year, HSS arranges the payment of more than 495,800 invoices on behalf of the WA health system. “We support our customers by processing payments on their behalf to ensure continuity of services, whilst providing advice around expenditure policy and procedures to ensure compliance and value for service,” Samantha says. Samantha has worked with HSS since 2007, formerly Health Corporate Network (HCN), and says she couldn’t be prouder to work for an organisation supporting the WA health system. “A real driver for me working at HSS is the fact that we directly support the doctors, nurses and allied health professionals working in our hospitals. “It is extremely rewarding t...
  • Our Paralympian and champion of the warehouse 13 September 2021 With the Paralympic Games having just ended, we recently took the opportunity to catch up with HSS’ very own Paralympian and legend of the warehouse, Joshua Hofer. Back in 1992, Joshua Hofer started working in the WA health system at Sunset Hospital in Dalkeith as a store person and cleaner. That same year, he competed in the Paralympics in Barcelona winning 5 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals swimming for Australia. In recognition of him winning 11 Paralympic medals, Josh was presented with an Order of Australia Medal in 1993 by the Queen personally. “That was quite an experience to meet the Queen, she asked me how my swimming was going,” Josh said. Amongst his many other achievements, Josh was inducted as a sporting legend of Australia at a ceremony in Sydney in 2014. Before working at HSS, Josh was a store person and linen hand at Royal Perth Hospital for 22 years ...

Celebrating Women’s Health Week 2021 08 September 2021 Women’s Health Week, 6 to 10 September 2021, is a reminder for all women to set aside time for their health and wellbeing by encouraging them to take proactive steps to be healthy in mind and body. According to HSS Audit Manager, Jo Lawton, sometimes it can be hard to prioritise your time and own health as a busy wife and working mother. “Since starting a family in 2003 and then returning to full-time work in 2015, I found I had less and less time for myself,” Jo said. “Over the years my health declined through bad eating habits and not enough exercise. I had all the excuses – too tired, too late in the day, not enough time and other commitments getting in the way.” “At the start of COVID-19 last year when schools closed late March and I was pretty much working from home full-time, I very quickly had time to reflect on where my life was at. &ldqu...

Meet Jocelyn Tan ICT Graduate Officer 16 August 2021 Meet Jocelyn Tan, an ICT Graduate Officer currently working in our ICT Applications Specialist Patient Care Systems team. Jocelyn is undertaking the WA Health Graduate Development Program to gain valuable experience in the development and implementation of health policies, programs and services. Now in her second placement of the Program, Jocelyn chats with us about what her experience at HSS has been like so far. What was your first week at HSS like? My first week at HSS was spent mostly getting to know my colleagues and familiarising myself with the inner workings of the WA health system. It was also exciting to meet experienced professionals who were very welcoming to me as a graduate. I started the Program working in the HSS ICT Application Design, Development and Integration team where I worked on the Clinical Workbench Project. Whilst with this team, I was involved in designing us...

From grad to Junior Application Developer Meet Elena 27 July 2021 Meet Elena Velikichevska, a Junior Application Developer in our ICT Application Design, Development and Integration team. Elena works with our customers across the WA health system to design and develop web applications and websites to enable them to better communicate with their patients and the WA community. Elena began her journey with HSS as a graduate in 2020 through the WA Health Graduate Development Program. She first completed a four-month placement in our ICT Security and Risk Management Team where she helped with the cyber security uplift initiative. “Working from home and communicating online during the COVID-19 pandemic were the most challenging parts of the placement,” Elena reflected. “Despite the challenges, I had the chance to learn about a framework for web applications and apply this knowledge to the project I worked on.” During her second placem...

Breaking down stigmas for better men's health 18 June 2021 Men's Health Week 2021(14 to 20 June) is an opportunity to raise awareness of men's health and preventable health problems by encouraging early detection and treatment of physical and mental health issues among men and boys. The health status of males in most countries, including Australia, is generally poorer than that of females. More males die at every stage through the life course, more males have accidents, more males take their own lives and more males suffer from lifestyle-related health conditions than females at the same age. To mark Men’s Health Week at HSS, ICT Service Improvement Analyst, Kiel Adam, shares his story on the challenges and positive outcomes of living with his health issues, which he hopes might encourage other men in similar situations to also seek help. How long have you been managing your mental health issues? Over the past eight years I've engaged on-a...

Meet James Mandy Manager Infrastructure Security 02 June 2021 Say hello to James Mandy, Manager Infrastructure Security. James supports our WA health system customers by leading and managing a team that enables secure ways of working with technology. “I’ve had a flexible working arrangement in place for several years and genuinely believe this way of working is vital for health and wellbeing. I’ve promoted the idea of ‘work/life’ balance, but since further developing myself as a leader and manager, I think ultimately there is no work/life ‘switch’ but just ‘life’. In reality, things in our personal lives can positively and negatively influence our work, and vice versa. Fortunately, at HSS, we have the right culture and resources to make flexible working a success. I lead a small team of seven technical experts and they’re working in ways that suit both them and the business, whilst deliv...

It’s just one of the many ways we are investing in our people. “Taking part in the HSS Coaching to Engage and Empower program was an opportunity for me to build on my informal training as a coach and a leader. Since completing the program, I’ve definitely become a better leader. Not only am I better equipped to coach my team, but I am a more effective delegator and have improved my time management. I also made invaluable connections with HSS colleagues during the course, whom I can now call on for advice and support.” – Lachlan Martin, Team Leader Recruitment. What qualities do ...
